Empowering Schools and Communities in Purba Medinipur, West Bengal

In a continued effort to combat malnutrition and promote sustainable food practices, the WePlant India Initiative recently conducted a Seedbank follow-up in Dhanghara, located in West Bengal. The visit was led by Ms. Munmunsau Mandal, District Programme Coordinator for Purba Medinipur, reinforcing the initiative’s commitment to strengthening nutrition and food security at the grassroots level.
This follow-up covered Ganendra Bidhyapit Primary School and a nearby local high school, focusing on assessing the effective utilization of distributed seeds and the progress of kitchen gardens established within the school premises.
The primary objective of the Seedbank follow-up was to ensure that the distributed seeds were being used effectively and that kitchen gardens were thriving. These gardens serve as practical learning spaces where students actively engage in planting, nurturing, and harvesting vegetables.
By integrating kitchen gardens into the school ecosystem, institutions are not only cultivating crops but also fostering awareness about sustainable agriculture, nutrition, and environmental responsibility among children.
Kitchen gardens play a significant role in addressing malnutrition and food insecurity. They provide access to fresh, nutritious vegetables that contribute directly to improving dietary diversity among students and their families.

Encouraging families to adopt kitchen gardening practices at home further strengthens community resilience. These small but impactful actions help foster self-reliance, reduce hunger, and promote healthier lifestyles.
The Seedbank follow-up in Dhanghara demonstrates how structured monitoring and community-driven efforts can create lasting change. By empowering schools and communities to grow their own food, the initiative is contributing to:
