Sowing Seeds of Nutrition and a Hunger-Free Future in Birbhum, West Bengal

Empowering Communities Through Seed Banks, Nutrition Forests, and Sustainable Food Systems

WePlant India continues to strengthen its commitment to building healthier and more sustainable communities through initiatives that promote nutrition, food security, and environmental conservation. As part of this mission, our District Programme Coordinator, Ms. Aparna Marandi, conducted an awareness visit to several Anganwadi Centres in Chandpara, Birbhum, West Bengal, to encourage community-led solutions for combating malnutrition and hunger.

During the visit, Ms. Marandi interacted with Anganwadi workers Ms. Anurupa Marit (Centre No. 54), Ms. Madhu Mondal (Centre No. 140), and Ms. Snigdha Mukherjee (Centre No. 22). The discussions focused on the establishment of Seed Banks and Nutrition Forests—innovative initiatives designed to improve access to nutritious food while preserving indigenous plant diversity.

The awareness sessions highlighted the importance of collecting and conserving native seeds during the summer season, encouraging families to develop household and community nutrition gardens, and strengthening local food systems through sustainable agricultural practices. These efforts aim to reduce malnutrition, improve dietary diversity, and enhance food security for children and families within the community.

By empowering Anganwadi Centres to become catalysts for nutrition and environmental awareness, WePlant India is fostering community participation in preserving valuable indigenous seed varieties while creating sustainable sources of healthy food for future generations. Seed Banks and Nutrition Forests not only support biodiversity but also inspire self-reliance and long-term resilience against food insecurity.

Every seed conserved and every tree planted represents a step toward a healthier, greener, and more nourished India. Through collaboration, awareness, and community participation, we are creating lasting change that benefits both people and the environment.

Together, we continue sowing the seeds of hope, sustainability, and a hunger-free future—one community at a time.
