What happens when children become seed collectors for a healthier future?
They turn a simple collection drive into something much bigger—a movement that brings together nutrition, biodiversity, environmental awareness, and community action.
As part of this vision, the WePlant India team conducted a Plantation Nutrition Forest and Seed Collection initiative in Thirumuruganpoondi, Tiruppur. Our team member, Ms. Kanaga, District Program Coordinator (DPC), Coimbatore, visited the area to support and encourage this meaningful community-led effort.
The programme brought together community leaders, school heads, teachers, and children, creating a shared platform for environmental learning and action. The initiative was supported by Rtn. Chakrabani, Poondi Panchayat President, along with the principals and headmasters of AVRS School, Ammapalayam Middle School, and AKR Public School.
The most inspiring part of the initiative was the incredible response from the children. Their enthusiasm demonstrated how young people can play an important role in protecting biodiversity and contributing to a healthier environment.
The schools collectively achieved an impressive seed collection:
Behind this number are thousands of small actions taken by children who participated in collecting and preserving seeds for a purpose greater than themselves.
That is the question that makes this initiative truly meaningful.
With the right care, these 18,809 seeds can grow into plants, trees, nutrition forests, and sources of food for future generations. They can contribute to biodiversity, strengthen community resilience, and help children understand the connection between healthy ecosystems and healthy lives.
A seed may seem small, but its potential is enormous. When thousands of seeds are collected by children and nurtured by communities, they become a powerful symbol of collective action.
Initiatives like these show that environmental education does not have to remain within the pages of a textbook. When children participate directly, they learn by doing—and become active contributors to their communities.
The seed collection drive in Thirumuruganpoondi is not just about collecting seeds. It is about planting ideas, nurturing responsibility, protecting biodiversity, and growing a healthier future.
18,809 seeds today. Countless possibilities tomorrow. 🌱
Together, let’s continue empowering children and communities to collect, conserve, plant, and grow—for a greener environment and a healthier future.
